Jets release RB Michael Carter in surprise move
The New York Jets released running back Michael Carter on Tuesday, the team announced.
Carter, a fourth-round pick in 2021, amassed 964 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns as a rookie but hasn't been able to replicate that production since. He's racked up only 106 total yards this year - down from 402 yards in 2022 - and has yet to score a TD in 2023.
With only eight carries in 2023, the 24-year-old, who expressed frustration with the team's offensive production earlier this season, ranks third among Jets running backs in rushing attempts behind Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook. Carter has also caught 15 passes.
Carter's release presumably clears the way for fifth-round rookie Israel Abanikanda, who has yet to play this campaign.
