Virus scanner downloaded rather than from software manager

I am having a computer specialist transfer my old laptop info to new one. Asked if he is familiar with a safe linux virus scan.
He said he is. Doing it remotely.
I think he downloaded clamav rather than get it from software manager. I just read it may be available there...
I am not savvy on linux,but i have learned it is best to get files from there.
Will not speak with him likely until tomorrow
If he did download it instead of using software manager, now what can be done
to fix possible malware this caused ?
The scan has found possible malware.
Should he handle that, remove what he downloaded, then download clamav from software manager and rescan ?
How to rectify this ?
