Drivers? RADEON RX VEGA 11 Nightmare without end
by LinWinux from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6H7HJ)
Hi everyone.
Wow, so I finally get myself a nice fast quad-core system with awesome (several years old) graphics (see title), but can't make the system work with Linux. At this point in time I'm totally frustrated and discouraged. At this point this gpu has been around since 2018, so one would think that by now Linux compatibility would not be such an issue anymore?
I have installed MX linux version 21.03 five times during the past 3 days. The setup has 16GB RAM, and the processor is a Ryzen 5 Pro 3400G (there's also one without the Pro) with the Vega 11 graphics. Installation no problem, system boots very very fast, everything looks wonderful. Start using the system but within a minute or less everything just feezes up. If I wait long enough it will unfreeze, but only for less than 30 seconds before freezing up again. This obviously makes the system useless to me.
I've tried switching to compton ... reboot, that's actually worse than before.
I've tried switching to AMD Tear-Free option ... reboot, can't tell any difference.
I've looked all over the web for a solution ... can't find anything that works. :(

One of the biggest problems seems to be that MX has by default deactivated the ability to install across various universally based packaging options. Many things which are suggested Online, and not just for this particular issue, for making corrections about one issue or another by adding sudo apt-get install blah-blah-blah-package for corrections, ultimately comes back with the error message that a package can't be found or doesn't exist.
Does anyone here have a solution to the Radeon RX Vega 11 compatibility issue?
If I can't get this running correctly I'll have to get rid of the system. :(
