can anyone help me unlock a guy out of his imac?

I work with the elderly and one of the lads has a M1 imac. I know nothing about them but would be ok with computers and tech but for the life of me I cannot get his imac unlocked. I'm not sure how he locked it but I presume he put in a wrong password too often or something like that. He has been locked out of it for about 3 weeks and I only found out! He must have spent i2000 on the thing and has a mental block about getting it working again.
So what i've tried is holding the power button on the back and waiting for the startup options. Sorry when i try to login normally with the password it just says This account has been locked. So i went into the startup options and chose I forgot all passwords, changed the password with the apple Id, using his iphone. Clicked on the icon of his name and then next and it says now that the account is temporarily locked. What do I do to unlock it?
He has a macbook too and we were able to get into it and sign into his apple id with the new password ok. It is just the imac that is locked. Will it unlock itself after a given amount of time? It must be 36 hours now since I tried. thanks in advance.
