Any suggestions on hardware upgrade?

My old i7 3770 is very long in the tooth. Just recently lost a SATA port. Thinking it's time to move forward. Assuming my PSU is good (600W Seasonic) I'd like to reuse the PSU, Case, RX570 video card, and an existing 1tb sata3 ssd I have.
Ultimately my normal usage is C programming, about to jump to C++. Minor gaming, older games specifically. Morrowind, Skyrim, Minecraft, Terraria, Indie style stuff and such. I can pick a modest ram set and motherboard but I don't know if AMD Ryzen is the better choice or going Intel. In either case I am not looking to remotely build some monster machine for gaming but a modest update to date machine that will give me reasonable performance without breaking the bank. I'll probably put Arch on it for the hardware support. It's been so long since I've compared hardware I don't even know what to look for anymore?
Any suggestions on which path would be much appreciated.
