Linux Update policies

Starting to play with Linux, never did any update yet.
I am running Linux Lite 3.2 (32 bit) on an old laptop. It is running fine, as far as I can tell so far.
I do not know if 3.2 is the latest version supporting 32 bit (can look up or somebody tell me here), the most recent versions definitely do not support 32 bit anymore.
I'd like to play with updates as well, but I want to be careful not to mess up my well-running system:
1) If I update, is there any danger that I get an update to a 64 bit system that then would not run anymore on that old 32 bit computer?
2) Can I specifically update to the last 32 bit version (say, 3.3)?
1) + 2) Is there an automatic mechanism preventing me to update to a version that would not run on my system anymore?
