Primary to take place on 19 March for 20th congressional district in Bakersfield, vacant after former House speaker's resignation
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has set a mid-March special election date to fill the US House seat vacated by the former speaker Kevin McCarthy.
In a statement, Newsom set the 19 March primary date for the 20th congressional district contest. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the top two vote-getters would advance to a 21 May matchup to fill the seat.
