The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to meet with Michigan bench boss Jim Harbaugh about their coaching vacancy next week, sources told Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Harbaugh has reportedly suggested to associates there's a real possibility he could leave the Wolverines to become Los Angeles' head coach.

It was previously reported that the 60-year-old is a top candidate for the Chargers, who fired Brandon Staley in mid-December.

The Raiders could also pursue Harbaugh, who led his alma mater to a national title this season, add Pelissero and Rapoport. However, interim coach Antonio Pierce is reportedly the leading contender for the job and has the support of key players.

Michigan is reportedly attempting to retain Harbaugh. Negotiations for a new deal are ongoing.

As a college coach, Harbaugh can interview with NFL teams immediately as he's not subject to the new rule barring in-person meetings until after the divisional round.

Harbaugh, who previously led the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14, will not require the team he joins to allow him to hire his own general manager, sources told Pelissero and Rapoport.

Potential suspensions from multiple pending NCAA investigations into possible sign-stealing and recruitment violations complicate Harbaugh's situation.
