The Washington Commanders are targeting Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their top choice for its next head coach, sources told Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

While the Commanders want Johnson, they intend to conduct a search "with openness and flexibility," adds Russini.

Johnson is among the most in-demand candidates of the 2024 hiring cycle.

The Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Atlanta Falcons have reportedly requested to interview the 37-year-old. Carolina also views Johnson as its No. 1 candidate, adds Russini.

In his two seasons as offensive coordinator, Johnson has transformed the Lions into one of the NFL's best offenses. Detroit finished fifth in scoring in both 2023 and 2022.

The Commanders are attempting to kickstart a new era following Josh Harris' purchase of the team from longtime owner Dan Snyder. Washington fired Ron Rivera after four seasons in charge and reportedly hired Adam Peters as its new general manager.

The NFC East club holds the No. 2 pick in the 2024 draft and is widely expected to select a quarterback.
