Mike McCarthy won't sign an extension with the Dallas Cowboys this year and is expected to coach the 2024 season on an expiring contract, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

McCarthy's future with the team was unclear after Dallas' 48-32 home loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. It was another disappointing postseason outcome for a Cowboys team that has gone one-and-done eight times since the 1996 season.

Dallas opted to bring back McCarthy for another campaign, with owner Jerry Jones saying Wednesday that his team is "very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals" with McCarthy on the sideline.

Jones believes that coaching on an expiring contract could bring out the best in 60-year-old, according to Schefter, who notes that McCarthy's predecessor - Jason Garrett - coached into his deal's final year twice.

A Super Bowl-winning coach as a member of the Green Bay Packers, McCarthy has posted a 42-25 record across four seasons with the Cowboys. However, he's only 1-3 in the playoffs.

Several Dallas players - including quarterback Dak Prescott - showed support for McCarthy following the Packers matchup. Prescott, whose deal has only one season left, is expected to sign a new extension in the offseason. His current contract includes a cap hit of $59.45 million in 2024.
