Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy interviewed for the team's head coach opening last week, a source told Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.

The interview was "detailed" and "checked all of the boxes," Anderson reports.

It's reportedly the first time the 54-year-old received interest from clubs looking for new head coaches this year. He interviewed for multiple openings in previous seasons.

Bieniemy joined the Commanders ahead of the 2023 campaign after spending 2013-2022 with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was K.C.'s offensive coordinator for his final five seasons with the team.

The Colorado alumnus was part of the coaching staff that helped quarterback Patrick Mahomes win two MVP awards, an Offensive Player of the Year honor, and five Pro Bowl selections.

Bieniemy won two Super Bowls during his tenure with Kansas City while the team consistently ranked near the top of most offensive categories.

He didn't enjoy the same prolific success in his first year with the Commanders, however. Washington's offense averaged 312.8 total yards and 19.4 points per game in 2023, ranking 24th and 25th in the NFL, respectively.

Bieniemy played running back for the then-San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Philadelphia Eagles during his nine-year playing career. He accumulated 2,812 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns before starting his coaching career.
