The Philadelphia Eagles are interviewing Ron Rivera for their vacant defensive coordinator job, sources told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Rivera was fired as the head coach of the Washington Commanders following a 4-13 record in 2023. He accumulated a 26-40-1 mark across four seasons as the club's head boss.

The 62-year-old spent nine years as the Carolina Panthers' head coach before landing in Washington. He led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015.

Rivera has ties to the Eagles organization and owner Jeffrey Lurie. He coached in Philadelphia under defensive coordinator Jim Johnson from 1999-2003 before becoming the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator in 2004. His last defensive coordinator job was with the then-San Diego Chargers from 2008-2010, where he led them to top-10 scoring defenses in his final two campaigns.

Despite his struggles in Washington, the Commanders ranked eighth in defensive success rate from 2020-23 under Rivera, per Ben Baldwin's database.

The Eagles reportedly fired defensive coordinator Sean Desai on Sunday. Senior defensive assistant Matt Patricia, who took over defensive play-calling duties late this season, is also not expected to be back with Philadelphia. The Eagles ranked 30th in points allowed per game in 2023.
