Joe Barry will not return as Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator in 2024 after three seasons with the franchise, the team announced Wednesday.

"We want to thank Joe for his commitment and contributions to our success the past three seasons," head coach Matt LaFleur said in a statement. "These decisions are extremely difficult and Joe is one of the best men I've had the opportunity to work with in this league."

The team is still discussing the possibility of retaining Barry in a different role, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

The Packers' defense offered a mixed bag of results in 2023. The unit ranked 10th in points allowed in 2023 - its best showing under Barry - but finished 17th in yardage allowed.

Including the playoffs, Barry's unit allowed over 400 yards of offense on five occasions. However, the team also surrendered 20 points or less in nine games.

LaFleur left Barry's future open for speculation earlier this week, saying he was "not there yet" when asked about the coordinator's future, according to NFL.com's Kevin Patra.

Barry joined the Packers in 2021 to replace former defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.
