Keyboard & Mouse completely disabled when X starts (Thinkpad X220t)

Hi, I've been installing Gentoo the past couple days on my "new" Thinkpad X220t. I finally managed to run X on a normal user account, and i3 looks fine / loads my config just fine.
But, none of the keybinds work. If I run it as root with no config, I can't even hit Enter or Esc to tell it to generate a default config. The caps lock light doesn't come on when I hit it, and Ctrl-Alt-Fx doesn't work to switch to another TTY for debugging. The only way to get out is holding down the power button, and the only reason I know it's not frozen is that the clock updates every 5 seconds like it's supposed to.
I already saw this thread, and I added "INPUT_DEVICES=evdev" and "hal dbus" to my global use flags and recompiled everything overnight:

My Xorg log file was complaining about libinput, so I emerged that. But now the log files in /var and ~/.local/share/ are empty, no matter how many times I try to start X and reboot. Does anyone know what's going on? Is this a known issue?
