Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt
This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is also our second place winner on the funny side. It's from That One Guy in response to our refusal to take down our posts about Appin:
Someone didn't do their homework...
If only there had been some way for Rajat Khare and Appin to know how well attempting to silence TD would go for them, perhaps a long-running but ultimately unsuccessful lawsuit against the site or, I dunno, some sort of effect tied to the idea of attempting to silence someone only for that attempted censorship resulting in way more attention drawn to something than it otherwise would have garnered...
In second place on the insightful side, it's PaulT responding to a comment accusing Techdirt of anti-police hate speech for pointing out the lack of connection between police budgets and results:
If police get more money, they should be expected to justify it with results" = anti-police hate speech"?
For editor's choice on the insightful side, we start out with a comment from Toom1275 about what's going on with KOSA:
This is all the same stupid song and dance we had with FOSTA:
- Scammers grossly exaggerate a problem
- Scammers proclaim themselves as hereoes coming in to save the children from the problem
- Every competent person looks at the proposed legislation and sees how it will only cause harm with zero benefits
- Scammers accuse the experts of supporting child rapists; ignorant morons lap it up
- The bill passes
- Once the bill takes effect, it turns out all the critics were 100% right and its supporters all have blood on their hands
Next, it's Cliff Jefferson distilling the core problem with the bill:
The whole idea of a bill that prohibits harm" without a concrete definition is ridiculous. If that worked we'd only need one criminal law: it's illegal to harm anyone.
But that won't suffice because we apparently have a national disagreement about whether it's harmful to tell a child know you don't have to act like a Real Man to be a good person, just be kind and you can look however you want and love whoever you love."
Over on the funny side, our first place winner is an anonymous comment about the HP CEO invoking the risk of viruses to defend the company's practice of crippling printers that use cheaper ink:
You know, it's well documented that CEOs can infect others with viruses, which can then spread out. Potently to the rest of humanity. Is he arguing we should brick CEOs. Just in case?
We've already had the second place winner above, so it's straight on to our first editor's choice with a comment from Cat_Daddy about the recent grandstanding congressional hearing on kids and social media:
This hearing was so unproductive and unprofessional, I'm honestly shocked that they didn't have a fruit stand nearby for tomato throwing.
Finally, though I like most Canadians have never quite understood why Americans find poutine so funny (isn't it right up your alley?), this anonymous joke got enough votes that I feel obligated to highlight it in the editor's choice:
As far as I'm concerned, social media sites like FB don't suppress enough pro-Canadian (ie, pro-Poutine) speech!
That's all for this week, folks!
