Report: Commanders offered HC job to Macdonald
After a drama-filled and lengthy head coaching search, the Washington Commanders ended up with their third choice.
Washington offered the job to Mike Macdonald, but he instead became the Seattle Seahawks head coach after the club "swooped in with more money," sources told The Athletic's Ben Standig and Dianna Russini.
The Commanders pivoted to former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn after missing out on the ex-Baltimore Ravens assistant.
Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was also believed to be the favorite for Washington's top job before he opted to return to Detroit.
"Any full-court press of the former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator may have remained shelved if Johnson had the courtesy to attend a Tuesday meeting that many viewed as a formality to his hiring," add Standig and Russini.
Washington reportedly made a last-ditch effort to stop Macdonald from taking the Seattle job.
The Commanders were the last team to land a new head coach after the hiring cycle began with eight vacancies. The NFC East club, taken over by Josh Harris in July 2023, moved on from Ron Rivera following four seasons in charge.
Quinn served as the Atlanta Falcons' head coach between 2015-20, going 43-42 in the regular season and 3-2 in the playoffs, including a Super Bowl appearance during the 2016 campaign.
