JPEG vs JPG

As far as I know they are the same thing just a name to call, but why some app uses different name ? That isn't a serious problem as long as the app can display the image, but on a cell phone that is an annoying problem. Whenever I edit a photo, some app insists on rename it to JPEG, so that it won't overwrite the original one and double my images. I did not know that until later I found I've so many duplicates, so I installed an app to search for duplicate files and remove them, but the app can't find any coz it won't recognize that extension ! so I need to do it on PC, but doing it via USB is super slow, and doing it via card reader always corrupted some files, which lead to the SD card reliability problem. Eventually I have to do it on the phone by hand ! I wonder if Iim alone on this.
