Jacksonville general manager Trent Baalke suggested in January that the team would tag Allen if the two sides couldn't reach a long-term deal, promising that the star defender would "be a Jaguar next year."

The one-year tender for Allen is projected to cost $24 million.

The Jaguars increased contact with Allen's representatives and made progress on an extension over the last few weeks, a source told Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network.

Allen - who was selected No. 7 overall in 2019 - produced a breakout season in his fifth year to establish himself as Jacksonville's franchise defensive player.

He tied for second in the NFL in sacks (17.5) and broke the Jaguars' single-season record for quarterback takedowns.

The 26-year-old has appeared in 74 games (60 starts) and racked up 45 sacks, 251 total tackles, nine forced fumbles, and two interceptions.

Players hit with the tag have until July 15 to sign their one-year tender or agree to a long-term deal.
