Chiefs adding Marquise Brown
The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing in a high-profile wide receiver as they try to pull off a historic three-peat.
Kansas City is signing Marquise Brown to a one-year contract worth up to $11 million, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 26-year-old confirmed the agreement on social media Thursday.
Brown spent the last two years with the Arizona Cardinals and saw his contract expire at the end of the 2023 campaign. While playing in a Cardinals offense that didn't have quarterback Kyler Murray for half of the season, Brown posted one of his least productive campaigns with 51 receptions, 574 yards, and four touchdowns in 14 games. Those numbers, however, would've ranked second among Chiefs wide receivers - and third on the team - last year.
Brown, who was traded from the Baltimore Ravens to the Cardinals during the 2022 offseason, battled injuries in Arizona and wasn't able to top 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. In 2021, the former first-round pick set career highs with 91 catches and 1,008 yards with Baltimore. The Oklahoma product caught 118 passes for 1,283 yards and seven touchdowns across 26 appearances in two campaigns with the Cardinals.
The Chiefs won their second straight Super Bowl - the third of the Patrick Mahomes era - last season despite having issues at wide receiver. Kansas City's pass-catchers had the most dropped passes in the league in 2023. However, tight end Travis Kelce and rookie wideout Rashee Rice stepped up in the playoffs to help Andy Reid's outfit claim another championship. No NFL team has ever lifted the Lombardi Trophy in three straight years.
Despite his recent injury history, Brown provides upside and a lot of speed to the Chiefs, owners of one of the NFL's most creative offenses. Kansas City recently released veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, leaving Skyy Moore, Justin Watson, and Kadarius Toney as its other wideout options.
