How do I get an LG dvd burner to be recognized in Ubuntu (and/or LMDE)?

I cannot get Ubuntu (or linux mint debian edition) to recognize my external DVD drive (an LG GP65NB60). It was manufactured last year, has the latest available firmware from LG and works fine in Windows. I am using Ubuntu 24.04 kernel 6.8.0-31-generic. I am at a total loss and don't know how to proceed. lsusb doesn't show anything indicating that it recognizes that this device is connected to the PC. Using it in Ubuntu is my priority as that is the PC I use most frequently.

A quick disclaimer that I also asked this question on AskUbuntu.com and I hope I didn't break any rules by posting here as well. If I receive a response I will update this post.
