space key not functioning as intended VMware - kali Linux

Hello all, I'm having a real problem with my kali Linux - 2024.1 installed. on VMware VM on my 2019 macbook pro 16.
although I think the problem lies in the VM
every time I hit the space key it takes me to the VMware -edit hardware settings- in the top taskbar.
I have tried xev and no response from the key.
have updated, and changed configurations in VMware keyboard settings and kali keyboard settings - nothing will make the space key function as intended.
the only way I can get it to space is by holding Shift and hitting space key.
been at this for almost a week if anyone knows how to resolve please help.
