nvidia proprietary driver, or nouveau, for which card?

hello
i read here and here over the internet, that some comments says that few GPU of nvidia works well with the nouveau, better than the nvidia official one.. but also that the contrary is true, everything depending on : the model of the nvidia GPU.
however even if it's easy to identify by just lspci or lshw -c display, but to find out which GPU driver is best adapted to which nvidia (or any manufacturer?) card is a bit hard sometimes for users..
is there a kind of table whom works with linux (or others OSS systems -haiku, bsd..) depending of the GPU or the machine?
eg i have this GPU (nvidia something, amd something else..) i might install this driver (or nothing) for linux, for bsd, or for others systems?
thank you!
