tar: How to view last access times without extracting any files?

From the manual:
Quote:
--atime-preserve[=METHOD]

Preserve access times on dumped files, either by restoring the times after reading (METHOD=replace, this is the default) or by not setting the times in the first place (METHOD=system)
From what I understand, this requires extracting the contents of TAR files.

How can the atime (access time) be seen without extracting the TAR first?
