Do the motors of HDDs keep running even when unmounted?
by grumpyskeptic from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6NTS5)
Using Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon.
I have a desktop tower with three internal Sata HDD. Only the boot HDD is mounted after start-up, the other two only mount if I command them to.
Even when the two extra HDD have never been mounted, after a few minutes all the HDD get hot. They are hot according to Disks, and feel hot to touch also.
I am surprised the unmounted HDD get hot.
Question: Do the motors of HDDs keep running even when they are unmounted?
Thanks.
