Scribus or other DTP Package

I'm getting weird formatting issue with LO writer trying to set up a evenly lined page with pics. It looks right, but I can't print it reliably.
So I tried installing Scribus via the 15.0 SlackBuild, but that went down in flames with an awkward fault, which I decided not to pursue.
I did stick in Scribus in Devuan (my 'just in case' distro), and sure, it pulled in a bunch of dependencies and I got a very inscrutable looking Scribus which screams "Long Learning Curve" at me. The GUI looks weird.
Now I can do the learning curve, and I will if there's no other way out. I'm looking for the lazier way to try some DTP in Current that seems a bit beyond LO writer.
