Remapping a key in Debian/KDE Plasma
by Weathervane from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6P2MH)
I'm trying to make my way through newbie tutorials but my laptop keyboard is driving me crazy. I want to replace the function of some of the useless media keys with HOME and END function.
I've spent all day experimenting with xmodmap. The file updates as expected, but changes don't take effect on the keyboard. I noticed, however, that my laptop (which had a fresh install of Debian 12.5 yesterday) is now clunky-slow restarting and the only thing I've done with it so far is work with xmodmap.
I am using KDE Plasma and made no special customization changes. I looked through the keyboard options available in settings and could not find a way to re-map an individual key.
Is there a better command than xmodmap or a way to get xmodmap working? Ideally, I'd like my re-mapped key(s) to persist for my user account on re-starts.
I searched this forum and others but did not find anything from recent years. Poor search technique? If this question has been answered in regards to Debian, please post a link. Many thanks.
