Why do I sometimes (not always) have to wait a while before name resolution works?

This is an intermittent problem and most likely to happen when I start up early in the morning to take advantage of my ISP's cheap period.
Symptoms: it takes a long time to get to a site on FF and sometimes it just times out. It's not a simple connection problem because I can ping the Google nameserver at 8.8.8.8 and that seems to work at normal speed. Once I have reached my first site, subsequent connections work at normal speeds for the rest of the session.
I am using my router as my primary nameserver but I don't know what servers it calls on. Probably those provided by my ISP.
