VLC Player alternative

Hello,
i've been experiencing different issues with VLC Media Player recently. First i realized that i can't read DVDs even though libdvdcss is installed. Now i get the 'VLC is unable to open the MRL' error when trying to play my favourite internet radio. There seems to have been a change in the station, a new, improved player on the page itself and serveral links to different media players (no VLC), none of the playlists or stream-URLs seem to work with VLC.
Before i start troubleshooting i would like to inquire about any similar experiences. Were there changes that are known to dampen the otherwise fine VLC-Experience recently? Are there any recommendable alternatives? I tried MPV, but the interface is way less convenient than VLC.
