How to install programs on Linux (SteamOS or in general Linux terms)

Can someone ELI5 how to install programs outside the ones in the Discover catalog? It seems like every time I download an install package it's got either no instructions, wrong instructions, or obtuse instructions about how to install on Linux. And no two are the same - Some have .iso files, some have .deb files, some have any of half a dozen file extensions that god only knows how to run or install, and they're always hard to understand. Most just open as a useless Kwrite file with random gibberish in it. One website told me to run the "Installer Service" as if that was some catch-all thing like an install wizard, but I couldn't find anything called an Installer Service anywhere. Heck, half the time I have more luck just downloading the .exe file and installing it through Steam, though that doesn't work all the time. I just want to be able to download simple programs, even something like Zoom and I can't seem to do it.
