They lined up at food stalls for beef sticks, gourmet popcorn, Puerto Rican roasted chicken and the local speciality, fried cheese curds. Beer was flowing, the sun was shining and Republicans were experiencing something they had not felt for a long time: joy.

This year's Republican national convention in Milwaukee had the swagger of a party that believes it is on a glide path to the White House.
