Anthony Albanese has confirmed there will be a ministerial reshuffle, as ministers Linda Burney and Brendan O'Connor step down ahead of quitting politics at the next election.

The prime minister returned from five days' leave on Thursday to confirm the retirements and foreshadow he will unveil a reshuffled ministry on Sunday.
