What is the simplest way to have a qemu vm not save any changes after each shutdown/reboot?

I used to use live isos for this but I am unable to find one that works out of the box now since on this laptop it seems to require some upgrades to make video playback work properly and/or the live iso does not contain some program/s I want meaning intervention every boot.
Could I simply make a basic install to qemu disc, update it to how I want it, then when I have it how I want it just set the disc to read-only?
If dealing with files which I don't trust on the vm, will this maintain the same level of isolation as if running from a live iso? If not what else should I do to achieve that?
