All usb ports suddenly stop working

Hi,

Two days ago, the usb ports on my laptop all suddenly stopped working (2x USB-A 3.1 and 2x USB-C / Thunderbolt 3). External usb devices are given no power and are not detected.

Booting into an old lubuntu 20.04 live-cd iso image on my hard-drive made no difference. The most recent kernel update was a few days before, which caused no problems.

I never use sleep / suspend modes.

Power-saving mode for usb is disabled in tlp (see below).

It is likely a hardware problem?

It is a higher model laptop, but out of warranty, and without the USB ports I am a bit stuck. The thunderbolt 3 ports were the main reason I bought it second-hand.
