Open source forum software for old school forum like this but with good mobile support?

I hate how most of the forums these days, those that still exist, seem to make their layout look like social media and even worse often adopt the voting system crap of popular social media sites, encouraging hivemind mentalities.
I grew up on the forums of the early 2000s so want that simple functional aesthetic, but I understand most people are on mobiles now so what type of forums available will have that look but with mobile support?
I don't use a mobile but as this forum is very popular I would presume it also is compatible with mobiles?
The cleanest forum I know of is the archlinux forum but I read there is a lot of controversy at the moment over there as they plan to update it, with there being a lot of pushback. Many are saying the updated version will look more like aforementioned social mediaesque hybrid types of sites.
The reason given for this update is that the current forum software is going to be no longer maintained. Others say that is just an excuse but I am not up on all the ins and outs of it but suffice to say it is not a welcome change by a lot of the userbase there.
So any suggestions please.
