Connecting external VGA monitor with fl2000.ko

This maybe the wrong forum, but I'm running Slackware 15.0
I'm trying to connect an external Samsung VGA monitor to a laptop with no VGA socket.
I've got a Startech VGA/USB converter compiled a fl2000.ko module using https://github.com/Novando/FL2000, ran insmod fl2000.ko, ran ./fltest 0 in the sample directory and got the splash screen on the external monitor.
My home user kde System Settings doesn't see the monitor. What steps have I missed? Do i have to sprinkle xorg with some magic?
