Linux COM1 port to USB won't talk
by Ronbert from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6PY0G)
I was given a Linux machine with the suggestion that I move off of Windows 7 and over to Linux as it will do everything I do on Win7. Sorry this will get long. I want to give the complete problem description as I understand it. I don't know if this is a Wine issue or a Linux issue. Operator ignorance certainly is involved.
I'm struggling with everything." I used unix at work about 30 years ago so moving around the command line is comfortable. I am an engineer and can follow instructions carefully.
Dell optiplex with Linux Mint 22 Wilma Kernel 6.8.0 -40
What I am trying to accomplish- I have two radio scanners with which I use Win500 and Pro96COM software. They connect to my Win7 computer and I/O works both ways thru a GRE branded interface cable. USB on one end, 3.5mm mono or stereo at the other end (jumper for different radios). Cable is used for programming the radio in Win500. Cable is used to send data to the computer with Pro96COM. Tty identifies the cable as being from GRE (scanner manufacturer).
After locating Wine Windows Program Loader I have been able to get the software onto the Linux machine and open. The effort included finding and installing MFC42.DLL. The GUIs look normal. Location is Downloads. (I don't understand whether winecfg matters. The version under drive_c" doesn't find the DLL and won't open so I'm confused about that. But that's not important right now)
I have been unable to get the radios and the Linux machine to talk. When I go to pick a COM port on the scanner gui it says it's already in use. The other program says all 33 ports are already in use.
I have found discussions on the topic of getting COM1 to talk to USB. I've tried everything I've found to no avail. Symbolic link (ln -s ) doesn't work as there is already a COM1 file. Installing a COM1 entry in the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / software/wine/ports) pointing to ttyUSB0 hasn't helped. (it's quite non-intuitive how to add an entry there) . Wine wineboot -u didn't fix it either.
WineHQ shows an entry for Win500 that is some years old but it doesn't have enough information for my low level of understanding how the guy got it to play. Pro96COM has no entries likely because nobody has tried it. Win500 website has some words for Linux users but I don't know what's implied or what to do with the little info.
My friend didn't intend to give me a doorstop but we are getting close to it.
