Unable to boot after attempted upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04
by dubc08 from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6Q0GV)
I am pretty inexperienced with Linux and don't know very much about it, but I was able to set up a home system using Ubuntu.
I have been using the system for a few years for sharing and organizing home photos and videos, running a mysql server, and backing up important files.
Things were working fine until earlier this week when I tried to upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu. There was no specific reason I wanted to upgrade, but I got a notification from the OS informing me of a new version, and I accepted. If my memory is correct, I think I was upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04.
During the upgrade process, the computer rebooted and the boot got stuck with the following error displayed:
blk_update_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 2766517040 op 0x1:(WRITE) flags 0x700 phys_seg 2 prio class 0
...
sd 0:0:0:0 rejecting I/O to offline device
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
Each "..." above was another line, just like the first line, but with a different sector number.
Each time I tried to reboot, it got stuck at a similar place (I did notice that sector numbers were different each time I tried to reboot).
I was able to create a flash drive loaded with Ubuntu Live and boot from that. When I booted that way, I was able to see all my hard disks with the Disks utility, and I could not find anything that was obviously wrong based on the information provided by Disks.
I am hoping that there is a way for me to address this issue and restore the system to it's prior state.
Of most importance to me is a ZFS pool that I had created that contains a lot of files that are important to me.
After searching forums, etc., I have not been able to figure out what I should do next.
If you have any suggestions, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!
