access/use widgets?

hello

i use since a very long time the virtual desktops under linux
im wondering, about macos feature, where a keystroke can permit to appear in foreground, at the request of the user, to show various information, eg :
- weather
- various information (stocks, news, road traffic, etc)
- date/time/clock
- notepad
- calendar, tasks, reminder
- pictures (thumbail)
- systeminfo (uptime, cpu load..)
etc..

is there an easy way to do so, compatible with various DE, cinnamon, kde, gnome, windowmaker..?
