Notion Is Shutting Down Operations in Russia from September 9
- On Tuesday, Notion announced that it was shutting down its operations in Russia owing to growing restrictions from the US government.
- Users have until September 8 to export their data.
- Notion is deeply saddened by this move and acknowledges how inconvenient it'll be for its users but claims it has no other option.
Notion, the popular productivity and note-taking app, will no longer operate in Russia starting from September 9.
The decision was announced on Tuesday on its own website where it revealed that certainrestrictions imposed by the US government on software service providers had made it practically impossible to operate in Russia.
All workspaces and accounts of Russian users will also be terminated soon. Hence, Russian users are advised to export their work by the end of September 8. All subscription plans will also be terminated on the same day.In the announcement, Notion said that it sympathizes with the users and acknowledges the disruption they will face owing to this decision but it simply has no other choice.
About Exporting Your Notion FilesIf you have no idea how to export your data, you can check out their official help page. Here you will find information on PDF, HTML, and CSV exports.
However, before you export, there are two things you need to keep in mind:
- If you have too much data on Notion, the regular download option won't work for you. In that case, Notion might mail you a download link.
- Enterprise workspace members might face some trouble exporting if the admin has disabled this option from the settings. In that case, the export option will not be visible.
The good news is, that if the Workspace owner is not based in Russia and is only collaborating with users from the country, their accounts will not be affected. However, their collaborators will no longer have access to the workspace.
Although this decision might seem sudden, there have been signs over the past couple of years that hinted that Notion might be having trouble operating in Russia.
- For example, in 2022, Notion stopped accepting card payments from Russia, forcing countless users to switch to the free version of the platform.
- And in February 2024, Notion stopped functioning altogether unless you used a VPN.
The impact of this shutdown will be tremendous. Notion was popular among both students and working professionals. It was also widely used by businesses to manage day-to-day tasks and projects.
Many users took to Reddit to share their displeasure with this news. One user, a student, posted. Today I woke up...and I got the love letter from Notion saying that on September 9, all my workspaces will be nuked."
Another user commented on the same post and said This was a sucker punch, honestly. I have hundreds of databases there, it's been 4 years of uni, and right before the start of a new academic year we have this."
