Former federal Labor leader Bill Shorten to quit politics and become vice-chancellor of Canberra University

Ex-union leader, who led ALP to two election defeats in 2016 and 2019, has announced upcoming retirement

The former federal Labor leader Bill Shorten is retiring from federal politics to take up the role of vice-chancellor at the University of Canberra.

The one-time union boss will begin his new role in February and will remain in cabinet until then.
