With the release of new hardware comes price cuts on older models, and after Sony announced the new PS5 Pro and its $700 price point, the company is also gearing up to give the rest of us a much cheaper alternative.

Spotted by deals expert Wario64 just ahead of the PS5 Pro reveal stream, it seems that Sony's PlayStation Direct store now has new listings for refurbished models of the base PS5. They're not quite up for sale yet, but are listed as coming soon," and they're about $100 cheaper than their brand-new equivalents.

That takes the version of the PS5 with a disc drive down to $400 and the one without a disc drive down to $350, meaning you'll soon be able to get in on Sony's current console generation for half the price of a PS5 Pro. I still recommend a model with a disc drive, but I also watch a lot of Blu-Rays.

The listings, notably, are for the versions of the PS5 sold at launch, rather than the PS5 Slim that came out last year. Launch PS5s still run just as well as the slim model, so the difference is largely aesthetic, although note that the Digital Edition" launch PS5 will not be able to use the add-on disc drive Sony introduced alongside the Slim refresh. The PS5 Slim also has slightly more storage, but the 825GB on the launch model should still be enough for most people.

Sony is providing a 12-month warranty on all refurbished units, promising that users should expect them to run without issue, although you might notice scratches or other cosmetic blemishes. Still, it's a way for people who have been sticking with their PS4 to experience exclusive PS5 games like Astro Bot while paying less than the PS4 Pro cost at launch ($399).

Sony's also set to start selling refurbished PS5 DualSense controllers alongside its used consoles, although the price cut there is much less aggressive, at $65 used versus $75 new.
