Problems with 2 USB drives on ChromeOS and macOS
by derezion from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6QNMK)
On my Chromebook (HP Chromebook 14 with ChromeOS 126.0.6478.252 (Official Build) (64-bit) and Linux environment Debian 12 "Bookworm"), I have a 32 GB USB drive that seems to have gotten corrupted. This thumb drive suddenly had none of my data and nothing but files with cryptic names (ex.: like what you might see when you open a Word doc in a text editor). I've never used this blue-colored drive on any other computer.
Then on my MacBook Air (early 2015 with macOS 12 Monterrey), I have another 32 USB drive that all my data disappeared on. A week or so later, I tried adding data to it, but it would disappear right away. I've used this drive on a used Linux laptop (Mint 20.2 or 20.3, Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS) and once on a public computer (Windows 10). The same thing happened with a 256 GB drive that I only used on this MacBook. The progress bar might show up for a folder I was trying to transfer, but nothing got saved to the USB drive.
I posted here because I didn't know where else to post. I didn't know whether to post 2 threads... one in the ChromeOS LQ forum and another in the MacOS LQ forum. I also don't know if it's a security problem so I didn't post in the security forum on this site.
