Main Disk invisible from flash booted linux

I tried to update my system76 linux laptop to ubuntu 24.04 and the new software completely fails to boot. There is a ubuntu disk option at the bios. The error comes up "Booting from Ubuntu failed. Verify it contains a 64-bit UEFI os"

I imagine the upgrade process failed after deleting the original os and before installing the new os.

So I went to the system76 website, downloaded their pop!_os iso image, found an app to write it to a flash and managed to boot that from my laptop. I fired up a shell in demo mode and looked for the original filesystems.

The trouble is I cannot find the main "ubuntu" filesystem, with the OS and user areas. I can only find a secondary disk on which I stored old files about 4 years ago. I imagine this is a bios security feature to prevent data theft if the laptop is stolen.

The system76 website documentation mentions a nvme0n1p1 partition that contains files, however only the old files are there, and fsck swears that the filesystem is clean. The only logical conclusion is that the bios is not telling the linux os about the ubuntu main disk. Not only will I lose some data that was only backed up some time ago, but installing a new OS will probably miss this disk completely.

So my issue is, how can I get the bios to tell linux about this main disk. I cannot get into the bios very much at all. I only get messages such as Intel Virtualization VT-x: Active VT-s: Active Trusted Platform Module: Active The Intel Management Engine is disabled at runtime to increase security.
