How to prevent applications in other virtual desktops from suspending under Wayland?

Hello,
I am running KDE Wayland on Manjaro. Whenever I switch away from a virtual desktop, all programs on that desktop (which are no longer visible) seem to suspend, or at least go into some very slow processing mode. For example, if I am playing a video in FreeTube and switch to a different desktop, the audio stops after a few seconds and then continues later in small bursts. Firefox is always unresponsive for five to ten seconds after switching to the virtual desktop it is in. Blender also hangs for several seconds after switching to it. If I put everything in the same virtual desktop, this does not happen when switching applications. Is there a way to disable this "feature" globally? I'd rather have apps running in the background than have a waiting period every time I switch virtual desktops.
