HTC Desire 510 - no connection - odd issue

Hello

I have an old HTC desire 510 which I use for occasional things when I need an android phone. I could easily just dispose of it given its venerable age. However, as a goal I would like to keep it working. It has been working very well until recently. Of couse it will not load many modern apps from play store. But play s tore was working and it connected well to wifi and older apps worked ok. Suddenly it has stopped downloading any items from playstore or F droid. It shows no connection on any download. Wifi is connected and I can browse internet. I have tried two different Google addresses which are up to date and Gmail works fine on other OS. I also tried downloading using mobile connection and the same no connection error occurs. I cannot decide if it is:
a Google issue
a hardware issue ( I can see many people encounter HTC connection problems)
a router issue
any other cause.

I have tried booting the secret menu it shows the following contradictory report.

Wi-fi enabled
Net state - disconnected
Supplicant Disconnected

Any ideas to solve - welcome. I have done the usual, switch off - on, changing settings for wifi etc and even a factory reset.
