On Monday (September 30) night, Sony's PlayStation Network (PSN) was hit by a massive outage that left gamers unable to get online. Affected consoles included the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PS Vita.

The issue was confirmed by the official PSN Service Status page, which read:

You might have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience."

Furthermore, acknowledging the extent of the impact, the service page listed affected categories under Other, PS Vita, PS3, PS4, PS5, Web."

About the Issue

The bug" basically locked users out of their accounts. They couldn't sign in, let alone play games (neither multiplayer nor single-player games).

For those who were signed in, launching a game displayed the PS5 error Code WS-116522-7," which indicates a system update failure.

For most users, though, offline games were seemingly unaffected. There was a brief window on Tuesday morning when the service was restored. The company even updated the Service Status page and revealed that the issue had been fixed.

All services are up and running" it read. But then a while later, the problem returned. As of now, the issue has been fixed for good - after almost 8 hours. However, some gamers are still facing problems with connectivity and communication.

The company has yet to address these concerns. Interestingly, it barely even acknowledged the actual outage on social media, as the updates mostly came through its Service Status page (which a lot of users don't remember to check) and a Japanese PlayStation support page on X. In simple words, users were left on their own to update one another.

For some strange reason, Sony has been quiet about this whole thing. We still don't know the exact cause of the issue or how many users in total have been impacted.

The PS5 Home Screen Bug

Yesterday, PS5 users were hit by another bug that put annoying ads on their home screens. Basically, the background of the game was replaced by promotional ads for other games - they showed discounts that were mostly expired.

After users began complaining on social media, Daniel Hiatt, product lead for Game Hub and Activity Suggestions with PlayStation, shared a post on X (which has now been deleted, by the way) revealing that it was caused by a new bug on one of the existing features.

Thankfully, by 6 PM ET, the bug was fixed and the original gaming background was restored.
