  • HBO's Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery' named Peter Todd as the potential creator of Bitcoin, sparking controversy and widespread discussions.
  • Todd quickly denied these claims on social media, humorously dismissing the speculation and reinforcing that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto.
  • The documentary was criticized for lacking evidence and presenting speculative connections.
  • The debate provided ample fuel for Solana-based meme coins, including $YOURMOM and $SATOWATER.

Well, it finally happened.

The much-anticipated HBO documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery' managed to confound even Polymarket's predictive genius by naming Peter Todd, a prominent figure in the Bitcoin community, as Satoshi Nakamoto.

Todd wasn't even on Polymarket's list of likely candidates, which featured names like Len Sassaman, Adam Back, and Nick Szabo.

But the debate rages on since Todd immediately took to X to issue a flat denial.

And over on Solana, the degens went into overdrive, turning Todd's snarky comments into meme coin heaven.

There's a lot to cover, so let's jump in.

HBO Solves' Satoshi Mystery

The HBO doc, directed by Cullen Hoback, interviewed several leading Satoshi candidates, including Adam Back. But in the end, HBO settled on Peter Todd as the most probable Satoshi.

The reaction was swift and savage.

Even within the documentary, Todd comes across as sarcastic, casting doubt on the case Hoback attempts to build. At one point in the doc, Todd responded, Of course I'm Satoshi. And I'm Craig Wright.'

And on X, Todd's snark soon kicked in.

Many found the documentary's narrative speculative at best, as it attempted to connect Todd with cryptographic milestones related to Bitcoin.

Like many theories before it, HBO's documentary ultimately failed to bring forth concrete evidence.

But pinning Satoshi to Peter Todd inadvertently provided fuel for Solana's meme coin degens.

Todd's Snark Pays Off On Solana

Pump.fun transformed how meme coins are made. The platform allows users to create meme coins on the Solana blockchain.

In just five simple steps, anyone can find a meme coin they like and jump in. Or make their own.

The process is so simple that there's virtually no barrier to creating a coin for any meme, or anything, at any time.

And once the news about Peter Todd as Satoshi hit X - which it did nearly instantly - meme coin enthusiasts quickly began hunting for Todd-related meme coin opportunities.

Peter Todd's account was instantly swamped with meme coin enthusiasts trying to figure out if Todd had a pet. He didn't love the attention.

But of course, throw a your mom' joke into a crowd of degens, and what do you get?

A token, of course.

We stopped counting variations of the your mom' token after about two dozen, but $YOURMOM reached a market cap of over $2.6M and is currently tradable on Raydium.

Why the focus on pets? In earlier coverage, we looked at the meme coin frenzy over $SASHA and $IVAN, Len Sassaman's cat and Peter Szabo's dog.

The fact that Peter Todd doesn't appear to own a cat or dog didn't slow the meme coin crowd down for a moment.

In addition to $YOURMOM, $SATOWATER - a meme coin based on a grainy photo of Peter Todd on a hike with a bottle of water - also garnered enough support to clear pump.fun's bonding stage.

It appears that a significant number of crypto enthusiasts don't care who Satoshi is - they just suffer from FOMO and love meme coins.

Money Electric - The Mystery Remains

In the aftermath of the HBO special, Hoback defended his conclusions on Twitter. And for that matter, even Peter Todd's denials haven't removed all doubt.

The Satoshi mystery remains unsolved.

That may be precisely what Satoshi wants.
