Key Takeaways

  • As per reports from anonymous sources, Amazon might be planning to equip its delivery drivers with a smart glass.
  • These glasses will give them detailed directions for every order and warn them of obstacles like locked gates or aggressive dogs, helping them make the deliveries more quickly and efficiently.
  • However, it might actually be a few years before we get to see the smart glasses in full action

Amazon is developing new smart glasses that will give its delivery drivers, real-time directions and speed up delivery.

The company hasn't officially confirmed the project yet but many employees closely associated with it have confirmed the news.

The sources also added that this product is probably not going to be out anytime soon. The glasses might not work as expected or the employees might not embrace them - there are many obstacles down this road.

About the Smartglasses

The smart glasses are being called Amelia" for now. The glass will likely have a small embedded screen, probably like the ones Meta's Ray-Ban glasses have, and might also be equipped with an audio system that will read aloud the instructions.

  • Speaking of its function, these glasses will give the driver detailed, step-by-step directions on where to go.
  • Once they reach their destination, the glasses will also guide them around the neighborhood or apartment so that they can find the exact house/flat faster.
  • For instance, it will tell them where to find the elevator and where to go once they get off the elevator.

After all, the last few yards up to the customer's doorstep are usually the most confusing because regular GPS devices cannot guide you through it.

What's more, it will warn the driver in advance about obstacles such as locked gates or dogs so that they decide to take another route if needed.

Since the smartglass will free their hands of the GPS device, they'll also be able to carry more packages at once, saving them the hassle of making multiple trips to their vehicle.

Will a Smartglass Really Make Any Difference?

On the surface, it might not seem like the smart glass will make any difference. It will probably only save a few seconds or a couple of minutes at most. However, since Amazon makes millions of deliveries every day, saving a few seconds on every order can make a huge difference.

The second issue that it might address is the growing competition from Walmart. The latter is providing extra benefits to delivery drivers during the holiday season - the busiest time of the year. This is also the time when both companies need extra hands.

And since Walmart might draw away all the extra hands with its incentives, Amazon might need to find a cost-effective way to manage its own deliveries.

Amazon is already struggling with high delivery costs - last quarter it rose to $23.5 billion. So the company is really trying to come up with ways that will make this whole process cost-effective and also time.

For the same reason, it has also installed scanners inside the delivery vans to help the drivers find the packages faster.
