Pam Bondi, Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general, sought to show at her confirmation hearing on Wednesday that she would protect the justice department's independence from the White House even as she echoed much of the president-elect's rhetoric in her remarks to lawmakers.
The former Florida attorney general and lobbyist told the Senate judiciary committee that she would uphold the longstanding policy restricting contacts between the White House and the justice department that aims to limit the opportunity for officials to exert political pressure on the department.
