Protests continued in New York and Los Angeles in support of Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil, who was taken into custody by agents from the US Department of Homeland Security over the weekend. Trump administration officials have accused Khalil of supporting the Palestinian group Hamas, while Khalil's lawyers say his protest activity was protected by the first amendment to the US constitution. Khalil, a Palestinian raised in Syria, arrived in the United States on a student visa and became a lawful permanent resident last year
